The President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, today in Baku, met with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev.
At the meeting they exchanged views on the overall bilateral relations between the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. President Ivanov and President Aliyev concluded that the bilateral relations, characterized by friendship, continuous dialogue and understanding, need to be further expanded in specific areas of common interest.
Hence, the Macedonian President expressed his expectation for enhanced economic cooperation and increased trade volume between the two countries through the potential opportunities offered by the Republic of Macedonia for realization of foreign investment. Our country, the Macedonian President said, stands ready to initiate direct Azerbaijani investment in the Macedonian economy through gas and energy projects, projects in the field of agriculture and tourism. To this end, President Ivanov said, it is necessary to intensify the contacts between the business communities of both countries.
The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, accepted the invitation from President Ivanov to visit the Republic of Macedonia, after overcoming the political crisis in the country. He underlined the interest in investing in the Republic of Macedonia with project for gasification of the country and extended an invitation for Macedonia to join the Azerbaijani gas projects to which the Balkan countries are already connected.
At the meeting, they exchanged information on the situation in the region of South Eastern Europe and the Caspian region, as well as on current issues related to the migrant and refugee crisis, and emphasized the necessity to continue and intensify the cooperation in the security, as well as to continue the cooperation and mutual support at multilateral level.
President Ivanov informed President Aliyev on the challenges faced by the Macedonian companies in the pharmaceutical sector in the cooperation with Azerbaijan, and urged to consider possibilities for overcoming those challenges.
President Ivanov, in Azerbaijan, partakes in the 5th Global Baku Forum where he will address the presidential session on "The future of international relations: power and interests". The Global Forum brings together more than 100 current and former presidents, prime ministers and ministers, diplomats, a number of prominent figures from the social and political life, university professors and representatives of the Young Leaders' Program of the Global Forum.
