|Ivanov - Nishani: Restraint and normalization of bilateral relations is necessary|
The President of the Republic of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, today in Baku, Azerbaijan, held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Bujar Nishani.
The two presidents at the meeting discussed the relations between the two countries in the context of the current political situation in the Republic of Macedonia and in the context of the challenges in the region.
President Ivanov, in the talks with President Nishani, reaffirmed the view that the way the post-election platform of the parties of the Albanian political bloc was adopted and the statements that followed by senior officials of the Republic of Albania constitute an interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Macedonia.
“Such interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Macedonia is an incentive to realize the great nationalistic ideas, tensions and is a negative example not only in the Balkans, but even beyond. It is necessary to reduce tensions in the region, as well as cautious rhetoric”, President Ivanov said at the meeting.
The Macedonian President said that the Republic of Albania is a friend and will remain a friend of the Republic of Macedonia and for that purpose further concrete reciprocal steps are needed to normalize and enhance the bilateral relations.
“The Macedonian national minority in the Republic of Albania and the Albanian ethnic community in the Republic of Macedonia are to be factors of rapprochement and enrichment of cooperation rather than a source of tension”, President Ivanov said at the meeting. In this regard, the Macedonian President expressed his belief that only through dialogue solutions can be found and differences on certain issues resolved.
The two presidents agreed that restraint is necessary, taking mutual steps to increase mutual trust and focus on common priorities which include good neighborly relations, promoting regional cooperation and focus on projects that will enhance and improve the lives of the citizens of both countries.
The meeting of the two presidents was organized on the sidelines of the 5th Global Baku Forum on “The future of international relations: power and interests”, attended by President Ivanov.
