The President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, today, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities – December 3, received representatives of the National Council of Disability Organizations of Macedonia.

The representatives of the National Council of Disability Organizations of Macedonia briefed President Pendarovski on the ongoing activities to mark December 3, as well as on the situation of persons with disabilities. Main challenges these people face on a daily basis are inaccessibility of facilities, lack of Braille literature, a small number of sign language interpreters, and insignificant state financial assistance. But the biggest obstacle for them, as representatives of the National Associations of Disability Organizations said, is stigmatizing these people in society.

At the meeting, President Pendarovski stated that he is aware that the inclusion of these people in society is not at a high level as is the functionality of the institutions. In this regard, as President Pendarovski pointed out, his Cabinet is open at all times for people with disabilities.

At the same time, President Pendarovski expressed support for the activities of the disability organizations and underlined that he would continue to strive for further improvement of the rights of these persons, through the improvement of the legislation and its consistent implementation.

President Pendarovski told the representatives of the National Council of Disability Organizations of Macedonia that regardless of the situation, they should continue their uncompromising efforts to affirm their needs and rights, for which they will always have his unreserved support.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the National Council of Disability Organizations of Macedonia, as well as of the national unions of the blind, deaf and hard of hearing, people with physical disabilities in Macedonia, representatives of the Republic Center for Support of Persons with Intellectual Disability – Poraka, of the national union of civil war invalids of WWII and representatives of the national union of labor invalids.
