During her working visit to Brussels, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova met with representatives of the Macedonian diaspora in Belgium.
Those who attended the meeting shared their experiences of living and working in Belgium, highlighting the need for ongoing communication and stronger ties with the Macedonian institutions.
For Siljanovska-Davkova, geographical distance does not imply a spiritual detachment from the homeland; while a person may physically leave his country, but the country never leaves him.
She stressed that the connections with the diaspora must be nurtured, expanded and deepened, regardless of the emigrants’ ethnic background, language or generation.
Some of the attendees expressed their readiness to share the knowledge and experience they have gained with the Macedonian citizens through various projects. They also offered to leverage their expertise and professional networks to help boost trade and ensure more effective utilization of European funds.
The President said that the diaspora must not be merely an observer of societal processes, but rather an active and equal partner in shaping them through institutional engagement, exchange of knowledge and experience and with direct participation in policy-making.
