President Stevo Pendarovski, on the occasion of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, sent a congratulation message to Ms. Berta Romano Nikolic, President of the Jewish Community in the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as to all members of the Jewish community in the Republic of North Macedonia.
Dear Ms. Romano-Nikolic,
To you and the members of the Jewish community in the Republic of North Macedonia I congratulate on the great Jewish holiday of light – Hanukkah.
Hanukkah is a reminder of the military victory of the Maccabees by which the Jews defended their fundamental freedom of religion, liberated Jerusalem, and, lighting Menorah candlesticks, re-consecrated the Temple. But, Hanukkah is also a celebration of a more lasting spiritual victory. The Jewish people managed to survive all the displacement, persecution, pogroms that culminated in the Holocaust because they did not give up hope. In that sense, the light of Hanukkah lasts to this day.
We especially need hope in this period of global uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the numerous challenges, we in the Republic of North Macedonia must continue to build solidarity, a just and free society in which the value of human life and diversity as a value of society will be respected. I am confident that the Jewish community will continue to provide a significant contribution to our common future.
Congratulating the holiday of light and hope, I wish all members of the Jewish community in the country peace, prosperity and, above all, good health.
Chag Hanukkah Sameach.
