The President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, met today with Karl-Heinz Lambertz, President of the European Committee of the Regions.
President Pendarovski expressed satisfaction with the visit, which is perceived as a support to the country’s aspirations for EU membership.
At the meeting, President Pendarovski reaffirmed the expectation that the European Council will set a date in October for the start of accession negotiations for North Macedonia’s membership in the European Union, which, according to President Pendarovski, will be a motif for further intensification of the reform process and will be in function of the overall progress of the state.
The interlocutors stressed the importance of the decentralization process and cooperation at local level between cities and regions, as an important prerequisite for addressing the challenges that citizens face, including climate change, energy efficiency, environment and security.
President Pendarovski assessed that the visit of the President of the European Committee of the Regions to North Macedonia is an opportunity for further cooperation and transfer of experiences, in view of the preparation of the units of local self-government in North Macedonia for the future membership of the country in the EU.
