The President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, received today the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, Oliver Varhelyi.
Extending a warm welcome, President Pendarovski congratulated Varhelyi on his appointment as Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations and wished him success in his work, expressing the expectation that he would give strong support to the prospect of the EU enlargement with the Western Balkan countries.
The interlocutors exchanged views and information on the current situation in the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as on the country’s aspirations for EU membership.
President Pendarovski stressed that the European and Euro-Atlantic integration remains a strategic goal for our country. In anticipation of the recent finalization of our NATO membership, President Pendarovski said at the meeting, the country’s focus is on the prospect of opening accession negotiations with the EU.
North Macedonia, according to President Pendarovski, remains committed to the European agenda, given the fact that the EU membership has a national consensus among the political stakeholders and high support from the citizens. The President expressed hope that by March this year a new methodology for conducting the accession negotiation process between the EU member states would be defined.
In the context of the early parliamentary elections, President Pendarovski called for responsibility of all political actors and stressed that they should be fair, free and in a democratic atmosphere, given our aspirations for a future EU membership.
