President Pendarovski, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities: I will be your voice wherever necessary and possible

2 December 2019 | Meetings, Press Releases

Today, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, visited and socialized with students from the State School for Rehabilitation of Visually Impaired Children and Youth “Dimitar Vlahov”.

Stressing that disability rather than being the basis for diversity should be the basis for similarity between people, President Pendarovski said that today we should talk about the obstacles that exist in society, not the obstacles in people.

“I will mention the wheelchair access, the paths for visually impaired, the Braille literature, the translations for deaf. It is true that there is progress and it is true that many institutions and organizations are removing these obstacles, but we still have a lot of work to do as a state”, President Pendarovski said, adding that the most serious problem, which still exists, are old prejudices and stereotypes.

“Any attempt to discriminate against persons with disabilities is a violation of the inherent dignity of the human person. This International Day is a reminder of our human duty to take care of your rights and freedoms and your freedom to make decisions about your lives”, President Pendarovski stressed.

Today’s event “Through the Game to Friendship”, marking December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the State School for Rehabilitation of Visually Impaired Children and Youth “Dimitar Vlahov” hosted a chess competition. It was attended by 15 students with visual impairment and participants from schools in the municipality of Kisela Voda and the private school NOVA. The President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stevo Pendarovski, was also part of the chess competition.

“Not coincidentally, today we will mark this day with a chess party. Chess, as you know, is much more than a game. It is the ability to make the right decisions and make the right moves to solve complex issues. Something similar as policy – making wise decisions to solve citizens’ problems. The message we want to send today is that you all need to be able to be actively involved in decision-making and policy-making, especially those that concern you. Only then will we be able to consistently achieve the goals for sustainable development by 2030”, President Pendarovski concluded.

The Director of the school “Dimitar Vlahov”, Gorancho Jakimov, said at today’s event that the school is committed to working with students, to improve the educational process and to follow modern inclusive social trends that guarantee equal opportunities for all.

During the visit of the school “Dimitar Vlahov”, President Pendarovski also visited the new high school facility and was introduced to the way the whole facility functions.
