In the Cabinet of President Stevo Pendarovski, on the occasion of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, a virtual event was held with the participation of representatives of the State of Israel and descendants of Macedonian Holocaust survivors.

President Pendarovski sent a message congratulating the feast of light, and as a central act in the celebration of Hanukkah, the candles of the Menorah were traditionally lit.

“The Republic of North Macedonia is especially proud of its Jewish community, which together with the Holocaust Memorial Center of the Macedonian Jews, is our symbolic Hanukkah, because it reminds us of the final victory of life over destruction, of memory over oblivion”, President Pendarovski said in his address.

Wishing tranquility, joy and health, President Pendarovski stressed that the celebration of Hanukkah is a reminder that darkness cannot encompass the light that illuminates the path of humanity to freedom, equality, justice and human dignity.

“These values support people even in times of great challenge, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. In these difficult times, we continue to nurture coexistence and respect for diversity, as the greatest value of the Macedonian society”, the President said.

This year, the Menorah candles were lit in memory of the Jewish community in North Macedonia that suffered in the Holocaust.
