A session of the Security Council of the Republic of North Macedonia was held in the Cabinet of the President Stevo Pendarovski this afternoon, at which it was unanimously concluded that, so far, adequate measures are taken and there is effective cooperation between all competent services, strict implementation of World Health Organization recommendations, and, with few exceptions, our citizens behave really responsibly.

“The Council concluded that the situation remains complex, and all scenarios for future developments are burdened by the main unknown, and that is: how long the pandemic will last”, President Pendarovski said after the session.

The President also stressed the consensual conclusion of those present at the session that all services that work around the clock to prevent the spread and deal with the epidemic should be appraised. “The necessary health care personnel, police and army forces have been mobilized, there is daily coordination at both central and local level and all available resources and efforts are currently focused on dealing with the crisis”, President Pendarovski said.

At the Council session, the President said that various aspects and consequences of the epidemic were discussed. The Minister of Health informed about the health aspects, while the security aspects were elaborated by the additional Deputy Minister of Interior and the directors of the relevant services. The Minister of Defense and the Chief of General Staff referred to the involvement of the army in supporting the police. The Minister of Foreign Affairs informed about the return of our citizens who were found in other countries after the closure of the borders, and the Governor of the National Bank, about the application of the Decree on easing the financial burden of citizens and companies when paying loans, on the financial stability of the banks, about the exchange rate and the situation with foreign exchange reserves. The representatives of the economic and financial team of the Government and the Prime Minister informed about the current situation with the budget, the scenarios with different projections for the next quarters, as well as the economic set of measures that support the Macedonian economy.

The President emphasized that by implementing the measures for limited movement and closing the borders, the economy directly suffers, and even the most developed countries face this major challenge in this segment.

“In this sense, we are facing a difficult period in which a series of measures and responsible decisions will be needed in order to reduce, as much as possible, the damage to the national economy. For that purpose, it is necessary to mobilize all economic capacities in the country and resort to the most radical measures only in extreme necessity and with a set time limits”, President Pendarovski said, emphasizing that the Security Council will continue to monitor the situation and work of all institutions engaged in this period, and until the end of the state of emergency will convene at least one more session of the Council before its eventual extension to present the overall situation with all the vital parameters necessary to make a decision”, the President said.

President Pendarovski called for respect for the recommendations, solidarity, calmness, rationality and responsibility of the citizens, while expressing confidence that with joint efforts we will defeat the epidemic.

In addition to the permanent members of the Council, at the invitation of President Pendarovski, the session was attended by the Chief of General Staff of the Army, Lieutenant General Vasko Gjurcinovski, the Director of the Intelligence Agency, Erold Musliu, the Director of the National Security Agency, Viktor Dimovski, the National Bank Governor, Anita Angelovska-Bezoska, the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Economic Affairs, Mila Carovska, the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of European Affairs, Bujar Osmani, the Minister of Health, Venko Filipce, the Minister of Finance, Nina Angelovska and the Minister of Economy, Kreshnik Bekteshi.
