Reaction from President Pendarovski regarding the latest developments in the Macedonian-Bulgarian relations

5 February 2023 | Press Releases

Following the latest developments in the Macedonian-Bulgarian relations regarding the events and statements of this weekend, President Stevo Pendarovski expressed the following reaction:

“I strongly condemn the vandal act of stoning the “Macedonian Cultural Club – Nikola Vapcarov” in Blagoevgrad, Republic of Bulgaria. Vandalism and crime of this kind are not European values and condemnation is needed, as well as investigation and appropriate punishments for the perpetrators of this act.

Moreover, I express regret for the incidents on the Macedonian border caused by a group of citizens of the Republic of Bulgaria led by members of their Parliament. I regret that we are not witnessing a condemnation of the attacks directed at Macedonian police officers and Macedonian institutions.

I congratulate the members of the police and competent authorities for their dignity and professionalism in dealing with the aggressive vandals.

I would also like to refer to the statement of the former Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Republic of North Macedonia, and current member of the European Parliament, Aleksandar Jordanov, which contains insults and offensive phrases for the Macedonian people, completely inappropriate for a diplomat and member of the European Parliament. In this case, I would like to add that it is not only a matter of lack of elementary culture on the part of the named person, but also of the harshest form of hate speech, which is unprecedented in the history of the Macedonian-Bulgarian relations.

Unfortunately, territorial claims and the denial of the Macedonian nation have become every day issue.

For such negative outbursts, we expect a timely and appropriate reaction from the official Sofia.”
