“It is unacceptable that Macedonian citizens, who are obliged to change their documents at own expense, are put in a state of panic and fear that they will be punished if they participate in traffic. I follow the reactions of concerned citizens who contacted me personally this evening and I understand their anxiety and anger.
I ask the parliamentary political parties to immediately pass amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety and to the relevant norms in other laws that regulate this area in order to enable validation of the driver’s licenses of all drivers participating in traffic on the territory of the country, whose validity period is not expired. As I said a few weeks ago, if there is political will, legal solutions can be adopted in a very short time.
No one may be punished for not having changed the driver’s license, since it is in no way the fault of the citizens if the validity period of their documents is not expired, considered from the date of issue, especially not for participating in traffic on the territory of our country.
I call on the competent institutions to promptly and accurately inform the citizens about all the steps that are being taken to overcome this unacceptable situation.
At the same time, as head of state, I want to reaffirm our commitment to the implementation of all undertaken international legal obligations, which derive from the so-called “Prespa Agreement”.”
