President Stevo Pendarovski received the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who is visiting the Republic of North Macedonia.
The meeting discussed the course of the European integration of North Macedonia and the next stages in the negotiations, the situation in the region of the Western Balkans, especially in light of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine and the economic and energy consequences caused thereof.
In this context, President Pendarovski was informed about the energy support package from the European Commission for the region of the Western Balkans, aimed at joint energy purchase with the EU countries. Emphasizing the importance of European solidarity, he welcomed the help to ensure the energy stability of our region, which will influence the mitigation of the consequences of the economic crisis.
At the meeting, President Pendarovski welcomed the signing in Macedonian of the Agreement between the Republic of North Macedonia and the European Union on operational activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in the Republic of North Macedonia (FRONTEX), which enables better border protection and the safety of Macedonian and EU citizens, through the rapid deployment of foreign police officers and equipment.
Regarding European integration, President Pendarovski stressed that all state institutions are making every effort to successfully complete the screening process, as the first step in the negotiation process, and that the country is ready to implement reforms in key chapters. In this regard, he thanked for the support from the European Commission, and pointed out that the dynamics of the meetings confirm the commitment and engagement of the European Union for the integration of the countries of the Western Balkans, which has a positive impact on the overall political processes and the reform agenda, as well as on the Euro-optimism in our societies.
President Pendarovski informed President von der Leyen that a new Ambassador will soon be appointed to the permanent mission of the Republic of North Macedonia to the European Union.
