The independent councilors believe that the current amendments to the Electoral Code, which stipulate the obligation to collect more than 1% of the electorate’s signatures for submitting independent candidate lists in some municipalities, put them in an unequal position in the electoral process.
For them, the above-mentioned amendments are unconstitutional both from a procedural point of view due to the shortened procedure, and from a material point of view due to discrimination.
They expect a legal solution from the MPs that will take into account the constitutionally guaranteed equality of the passive and active right to vote of every citizen, encourage political pluralism and enable fair and democratic elections.
The President reaffirmed the need for an inclusive procedure in order to achieve a broad consensus on the Electoral Code amendments, respect for international electoral principles, rules and good practices, as well as taking into account the decisions of the Constitutional Court.
