Siljanovska-Davkova signs UN treaty on Water Protection and Sustainable Development

10 June 2025 | Press Releases

President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, as part of the third United Nations Ocean Conference held in Nice, signed the Treaty under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Treaty).

The aim of the Treaty is to strengthen international cooperation and coordination, to halt the loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystems.

Stressing that although we are a continental country, we have made an extraordinary move by acceding to this Treaty, like many other countries. Siljanovska-Davkova said because when we talk about water, we mean water from the stream, from the source, to the ocean, and that is why it is important that as many countries as possible sign the Treaty.

She said that the Agreement imposes serious obligations on us that we should take seriously because we are obliged as a state to do everything to protect aquatic biodiversity and enable sustainable development of waters.

Assessing that the situation with the oceans and waters is not at all blue, the President said that things must change in the interest of their protection, because all countries in the world benefit from it, regardless of whether they are at sea or not – this means that our country will benefit from the protection of waters as well.

As part of the Conference held in Nice, President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova also had a brief meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.
