President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova received today the Ambassador of the French Republic, Cyrille Baumgartner.

At the meeting, opinions were exchanged on the overall bilateral relations between the two countries, which are characterized by traditional friendship, open and constructive dialogue and continuous improvement of cooperation in many areas of mutual interest.

Macedonian aspirations for membership in the European Union were discussed at the meeting, as a strategic priority of the state. In that context, President Siljanovska Davkova emphasized that the support of our friends and partners in the EU, including France, is highly valued and significant for us.

President Siljanovska Davkova expressed her expectation for continuation of the EU accession process, by restoring faith in the meritorious process of integration, with a focus on fulfilling the Copenhagen criteria.

President Siljanovska Davkova expressed hope that historical issues, which are a hundred years old, will not take precedence over the reforms which are the main national priority, and also expressed expectation for deeper cooperation with the French Fifth Republic in terms of application of French experiences in the development of democracy.

In the context of the rule of law as the first and most important criterion from Copenhagen, the President indicated the current internal challenges related to the violated constitutional principle of separation of powers, without which there is no parliamentary democracy.
