President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova received today representatives of the Macedonian Young Lawyers Association (MYLA) and the Center for Ecological Democracy FLOROZON and discussed current challenges in the field of environmental protection.
Representatives of both organizations presented their observations and recommendations with a special emphasis on environmental justice, prevention of environmental damage, protection of natural resources and harmonization with the European law.
According to Siljanovska-Davkova, environmental protection should be a key priority, and cooperation between institutions, civil society organizations and the professional public is essential for creating sustainable and efficient policies. She indicated that the involvement of these organizations in the creation of legal solutions should be institutionalized, through their participation in the commission bodies in the Parliament and in the Government.
The appointment of the expert in the field of meteorology and climate change, Prof. Dr. Spiridonov, as a member of the Security Council, is an important step towards integrating scientific expertise into strategic decision-making. This, according to the President, would enable environmental NGOs to contribute their ideas and proposals to the work of this body.
The interlocutors agreed that the threat to the environment is a serious security risk and a threat to the constitutionally guaranteed right to life.
They emphasized the need to use international experiences and promote regional cooperation in dealing with real challenges.
The President and representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and FLOROZON called for continuous education and encouragement of young people in building a partnership with nature as a necessary prerequisite for prevention of possible damage with unforeseeable consequences.
