Professors from the Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy – Skopje elaborated to President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova their opinion on the draft of the Concept for High School Education Reform.
At the meeting, the professors expressed their categorical opposition to the exclusion of Philosophy as subject from the corpus of mandatory subjects, as well as to the removal of the subjects Logic and Ethics from the category of elective subjects from the curriculum.
For them, such a solution is a degradation of these fundamental humanities, which contradicts the proclaimed goals of the concept: developing critical thinking, research abilities and problem-solving skills; encouraging self-confidence; awareness of individuality and responsibility for one’s own actions; building a national, ethical and cultural identity, as well as respecting history and cultural heritage and preparing for responsible citizenship and active participation in democratic life.
Such a change for the professors is a serious step back in the development of the personality of young people and their preparation for facing contemporary challenges.
The President, as an experienced professor, expressed understanding for their views and commitments, emphasizing the important role of Philosophy, Logic and Ethics in shaping the intellectual and moral dimension of the character of young people.
She expressed confidence in the reform orientation and assurance that the remarks of the Institute of Philosophy will be analyzed with due attention and taken into account when creating the final solutions.
