President Stevo Pendarovski, on the eve of World Diabetes Day – 14 November, received today the representatives of the Union of Diabetic Associations of North Macedonia – SZDSM.
At the meeting, the interlocutors discussed the current activities of the 25 associations united by the Union, aimed at improving the quality of life of people with diabetes. The representatives of the Union emphasized that in the past months they have been facing a shortage of strips and devices for measuring blood sugar, as well as a shortage of anti-diabetic therapy. At the same time, the interlocutors at the meeting pointed out that it is necessary to completely change the method of procuring insulin and abandon the system of tender procedures.
In this regard, President Pendarovski expressed support for their request to introduce a reference price for the purchase of glucometers and strips for measuring sugar, as well as to reimburse them for the costs of the new anti-diabetic therapy.
Pointing out that from year to year the number of people suffering from diabetes in the country is continuously growing, the representatives of the Union of Diabetic Associations emphasized that adequate education and raising of public awareness is also necessary, because as a result of unregulated blood sugar, the number of strokes increases as well.
