President Stevo Pendarovski received today the President, Judges and the Secretary General of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of North Macedonia.
At the meeting, the President of the Constitutional Court, Sali Murati, informed about the issues that are important for the realization of the constitutional position of the Constitutional Court, the staffing of the Court with professional associates, the current challenges they face, as well as the procedures for protection of freedoms and rights of citizens.
At the meeting, opinions were exchanged on the challenges faced by the judges in assessing the decisions for determining the existence of a state of emergency and the decrees with a force of law during the state of emergency. In that regard, the judges shared their thoughts on the announced Law on the State of Emergency.
President Pendarovski expressed support for the independence of the Constitutional Court and full readiness to cooperate with them, in order to build our country in a modern democracy, based on the rule of law and constitutionality and legality in the work of public institutions. The President stressed that, as before, in the future he will act exclusively within the framework of his rights, duties and competencies, in accordance with the constitutional provisions and respecting the Constitution of the Republic of North Macedonia.
The interlocutors also shared information about the proposal for introduction of the so-called constitutional appeal and the extension of the competence of the Constitutional Court in the protection of human rights and freedoms through amendments to the Constitution, as well as for the eventual adoption of the Law on the Constitutional Court.
The importance of the international cooperation of the Constitutional Court and the exchange of knowledge and experience with the European constitutional courts was emphasized at the meeting, as well as the financial independence of the Constitutional Court, as a necessary precondition for its quality functioning and development.
